Functional Literacy: Our Newest Venture

Volunteers from Manpower help hone students' job interviewing skills.

Adult learners with a GED, or those who have low-level reading or English skills, often lack other practical abilities like utilizing a computer or managing finances. In order to help students advance beyond the classroom, LSW has launched a new program known as Functional Literacy. The program has three core areas: computer literacy, financial literacy, and workforce readiness.

Since fall 2010, companies like Manpower and Johnson Controls have provided professional volunteers for specialized workshops to pilot the program. In January, Manpower employers were matched with LSW students for a job interviewing workshop in which students participated in a series of 20-minute mock interviews with job coaches.

Functional Literacy classes include computer basics, online job searches, opening bank accounts, getting out of debt, resume writing, and other pre-employment skills.
